Petite and proud
When we think of the word ‘petite’, we would more likely think of women rather than men. Words like small, dainty, slight, delicate, diminutive come to mind.
It’s easy to consider that those who are petite, may perhaps have a quieter personality. When in fact, it’s often the opposite.
These celebrity women all under 5’3”—Judy Garland, Lucy Liu, Salma Hayek, Anna Kendrick, Lil’ Kim, Kylie Minogue, Jada Pinkett Smith, Paula Abdul—each have huge personalities that exude confidence, courage and great action taking.
And how about these men, who many of us may have thought were much taller—Prince (singer/songwriter 5’2”), Andrew Carnegie (wealthy businessman 5’2”), Paul Simon (singer/songwriter 5’3”), Alexander the Great (Conqueror and king of Macedonia 5’6”).
Often, it’s in the compact where there are huge surprises. The best things come in small packages.
The beautiful thing about size—whether large or small, petite or oversized—is that there is fashion to suit us all. Simple lines mixed with unique and simple accessories, splashes of colour, or even neutral tones… each of which can reflect our personality as it is at that time or make us stand out more, project greater confidence, or even hide any flaws we may prefer not to reveal to the world.
Those who are petite often tend to feel a need to prove themselves. Perhaps there was a time when they were judged, perhaps bullied, even ignored, instead of being acknowledged, validated and supported in who they were regardless of their size. So that they stood out in their worlds, they may have needed to demonstrate they could achieve success in their endeavour in ways others wouldn’t. Those who are petite in stature often have a determination and a sense of commitment often not seen in others.
It’s truly gratifying finding fashion that supports the petite. Often this fashion can be disguised in simplicity. And in this simplicity, there are elements that state, “I am who I am. Take it or leave it.” In this, there is grace, there is a quiet and empowered confidence, a determination that cannot be held back, a strength that says there is nothing to prove.
There is so much to be admired and be grateful for in those who are petite, as well as for the designers who create fashion that suits the petite and the oversized. We are each unique in our own separate ways, no matter the size, shape, colour, culture, creed… no matter whether we are born with wealth or create our own.
More than anything we get to be grateful for being who we are, for being the individual who has so much to offer this world of ours.
